The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now recommends the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for males aged 9 through 26 years. A newly published study shows a link between the HPV virus and neck and throat cancers in men. (link to study abstract) This year more than 8,500 HPV-positive head and neck cancers have been recorded. According to the CDC about 60% of throat cancers are linked to HPV. More than half of people who are sexually active will contract the HPV virus at some point in their lives. However, most people with HPV do not develop symptoms. The HPV vaccine is a safe and effective way to possibly prevent these cancers in the future and is given as a three shot series over the course of 6 months.
